Clay tests your ability to control it as a medium and I find that very exciting. The many steps from
raw clay to fully fired ceramic ware are vast and challenging.
In this body of work I have enjoyed exploring primitive firing techniques, including pit firing and
sugar firing. The spontaneous and somewhat uncontrollable outcomes these techniques propose
are by far the most gratifying aspects of my work. In particular sugar firing, where a purpose built
kiln is fired to the required temperature using gas. Sugar is then strategically introduced into the
kiln it then burns creating a carbon filled atmosphere that is absorbed by the pots. This technique
makes for the most magical of outcomes.
I have also included wheel thrown functional and nonfunctional wares and some sculpture. I enjoy
many aspects of working with clay and wanted to showcase the vast outcomes achievable with
different clays, glazes and firing techniques rather than limit myself to any one technique.
